Winter MAPs Testing: What’s Changed

The Spring testings went well, but this Winter there will be a new system to MAPs Testing. Instead of leaving the scores that are under the National Norms, the students will be required to retake the test to get a better score.

The MAPs system is to record the student body progress. This semester for the winter testing, the students were given Student Progress Reports and told to try to meet or bypass their Growth Projections. Mr. Moore stated, “Students that are below the norms, but did not meet their growth projections will be required to retake the test.” The retake will be on Friday. However, “If you fail to meet your Growth Projections,” Mr. Moore informed, “you must continue to retake the test until you meet or bypass your Growth Projection.”

With this in mind, the goal is to meet your Growth Projection and bypass the National Norms or meet the norms. If you do not you will be redoing the tests you didn’t meet your goals on until you get an acceptable score.

Do your best so you do not have to retake the MAPs tests!



UNK Career Health Fair

This past Wednesday, juniors and seniors were given the opportunity to attend the UNK Health Career Fair. This gave the students the chance to see more in the health career field. Experts from local hospitals and clinics were there giving demonstrations gave demonstrations and held small lectures.


Students were split into three groups and rotated between a college fair, a lecture, and touring a new building.


Students were able to observe and touch pig lungs that shows the effects of cancer and , for the more adventurous kids, could touch a cadaver.
Students left with some treats,  insight into new health careers, and even some stress balls shaped like lungs.

2016 diesel career fair

Thursday afternoon, the students at BHHS explored and learned all about the world of diesel mechanics at the diesel career building in Hastings. This year is the 2nd annual diesel career fair at Central Community College, this career fair has lots of vendors that introduce students to the world With this only being the second year school counselor, Joe Hubl expects there to be more vendors than the previous year. He explains “this is mainly an event that will give employers a good look into who is interested in this field and why they want to do it.” The students will gain connections to the employers for future references and resources so that they may begin their career right out of high school or during college.


College Prep: What to Ask

This Monday, the Junior and Senior class will be attending a college fair at Hastings College. Like most fairs, students will see schools from all over Nebraska and some neighboring states.

Some students have never been to a college fair so here’s what to expect:

Booths will be set up all around the room with at least one admissions counselor present. Every college will be handing out pamphlets with different programs and information. If you’re interested in one of the colleges, you can wait to actually talk to the counselor to get some extra information. However be warned, there will be lots of people and it can get a little hectic. Mr. Hubl advises, “ Use this time wisely.”

Use this time to ask questions, even if you don’t plan on attending that school. Figure out what’s important to you. Do you want to see what Greek life can be like and what are some college traditions? Maybe you’re cautious about school and want to know about security and what healthcare is provided. Some kids want to go to diverse colleges, or even somewhere they can study abroad. Go into this with an open mind.

There are some questions every student should ask. Money is always a huge issue, so it is always good to learn about scholarships, fees, and if your credits will transfer. Will you want to live on campus? Does the college have employment opportunities for students? Not many high schoolers think to ask about how many students actually return after freshman year, which can be a huge giveaway on how hard the schooling will be. Every student should expect a challenge though.

According to Mr. Hubl, more often than not, students who were at the top of their class in high school will have studying problems before a student of lower rank. This is because college might be the first time those students experience a major challenge. Find a college that can help with this if you think you’ll need it. Some schools offer study groups and tutors. Most meet in groups but one-on-one is an option in some places.

While speaking to colleges, keep thinking of questions in the back of your head. Some of the most important things for students to remember often get forgotten in all the hustle. Make sure the college is a proper size for you, don’t push too far out of your comfort zone. Think about different forms of financial aid. Most importantly, will you enjoy yourself there? Everyone should get the right amount of fun and schooling.

College is a huge part of life, if you choose to attend. Make sure you choose the right school for your key interests.

College Prep: Teacher Insight on College and Career

Most students in this school will attend college somewhere. And we often have a lot of questions. So we turned to our teachers for their advice on schooling later in life.

We asked our teachers where they went to college, what else they’d be if not a teacher and what they’d change about their experiences. 25 teachers have responded to the survey.

Teachers gave some great advice to the students. One wished they had gotten in more hours of credit before college actually began.  Most of them wished they had studied more and worked harder, especially freshman year. Being social and participating more was also a common response. Don’t cut yourself short. Go farther in college, or take more classes not related to your major.

There is always a way to get into college. Saving money is super important, but there are other ways too. Getting a good score on the ACT can help with scholarships, and you can take it as many times as you want.

One teacher reminds us to think, is a 4 year degree really needed for what you want to do? That’s why having a plan is great. Visit all kinds of schools, you might surprise yourself and find something totally new.  Try job shadowing while still in high school, it’s a great way to get a taste of what you’ll go into. And never pick a school because of a significant other. College is about being you.

For fun, we asked our teachers what they’d be if they weren’t teachers. Answers were all over the place! Some ‘normal’ jobs like nurses, doctors, and lawyers. Others were more out of the box like actor, NFL quarterback, fashion designer, and even a veterinarian. And my personal favorites, curator of the White House and a SpaceCowboy.

Students, look to your teachers for advice and make an informed decision when it comes to college and career planning.

State Testing “MAPs” out Student Knowledge

This year’s MAPs testing may seem like every other year, but how much is actually known about MAPS testing?

MAPs stands for the Measure of Academic Progress. The grading on MAPs is much different from other tests. Grades are made as if they were on a yard stick. An average junior in math may be at 26 inches, but a sixth grader may read at a level of 28 inches.

The scores are comparisons of all the grades. Since the grades are comparing, it is extremely simple for teachers to see the scores of their students.  

When a teacher looks up a student’s score, they can see everything from the test. The stats a teacher looks up shows what the student has mastered, what they know, and what they need to work on. Teachers are able to see scores thanks to the Learning Continuum. Another advantage to using the Continuum is that we have become paper free, but stats are still printable if a teacher or parent wants a copy.

We are able to test many more students since the school has switched to using a website instead of having a server at the school. Now everyone can test at once. Before a max of 100 students could test at a time. The only time a test will be unavailable for a student is if the website crashes. The website is just like any other and does rarely have problems.

The school is always trying to show improvement. Principal Moore said he wants the students to become, “ intrinsically motivated.” Basically, that means he wants students to do well because they want to, not because they’ll get something out of it.
