On Wednesday, May 3rd, freshmen through seniors from Blue Hill, along with Silver Lake students, traveled to Red Cloud to attend a Traffic Safety event at the school. With the help of County Attorney Jennifer Benson, Crash-Reconstructionist Chris Slocum made an excellent presentation of the consequences of drinking and driving. Also, they discussed the formulas they use to figure things out about car collisions. For example, the formulas for how fast the vehicle was traveling, when the accelerator and the brakes were being pressed, and even if the driver and/or passenger(s) were wearing a seatbelt.
Following the drinking and driving presentation was another presentation by Officer Troy Schmitz about the dangers of social media.
Next, the students were brought outside to witness a controlled collision. A car was placed sideways in the roadway, while another car was driven 35 mph, hitting the parked car in the side.
Before the ride home, the students were taken back to the school for a meal of Little Caesar’s pizza, chips, cookies and bottled water.
Overall, it was a day full of both learning and excitement.
